In today’s fast-paced world, it can be difficult to keep up with advances in technology and what they mean for the way we live. The Internet of Things (IoT) is one phenomenon worth knowing about – it has the power to make life simpler and safer – all at the touch of a button on your phone.

A practical application of IoT

Here’s a quick story to illustrate how IoT can make your home smarter.

Imagine it’s the dead of winter, and you’re dreading arriving home in darkness to an icy-cold house. Now imagine you have a quick fix in your pocket – your phone. With a few clicks before leaving the office, you can turn on the heating to get your house all toasty. You can also switch on your indoor or outdoor lights to ensure your homecoming is a well-lit one.

This is just one small example. The possibilities for integrating other ‘smart’ things in your home are almost endless – think smart appliances, security and energy systems. It not only ups your home’s comfort and safety levels but has the power to free up your time too.

If all of this sounds a little too out-there for you, consider this; according to Statista, almost 20% of Australian homes currently use some form of smart home automation. By 2022, this is expected to almost double to close to 40%.

IoT technology for a Smart Home

IoT devices within your home are directly controlled by an app on your smartphone. You can access these devices wherever and whenever you want, as long as you have your phone and an internet connection.

There are a few different types of home automation systems on the market, but all are designed with your comfort, safety and convenience in mind.

Making things easy at home

As creatures of habit, we all have a before bedtime routine – pull down the blinds or draw the curtains, switch off the TV, turn on the alarm, switch off all the lights, and then finally collapse under the covers – exhausted. In the morning you do the reverse, ad nauseam. But installing MyHOME AUTOMATION means these things – and a few more – are done for you.

MyHOME AUTOMATION gives you one-touch control over all the electrical items in your house using an intercom or by accessing apps on your mobile device. In essence, everything ‘talks’ to one another.

You can:

  • Adjust lighting and temperature controls
  • Activate security cameras
  • Turn on (or off) audio-visual items
  • Control outdoor gates and sprinkler systems
  • Screen visitors and answer the door wherever you’re in the house

The customised feature is the niftiest of all – you can create bespoke commands to turn off everything before you go out or to bed. You can also set up some favourite ‘atmospheric scenarios,’ like a movie command to dim lights and close your blinds when watching the latest flick. Or, program an outdoor entertaining command that automatically plays your party playlist, turns on your patio lights and light up the garden.

Keep in contact with your home

The Classe 300X is a simple system that keeps you connected to your property when you’re at work, out and about, or on holidays. The internal video unit speaks directly to an app on your phone giving you control over a myriad of functions within your home.

Use it to:

  1. Answer the door when you’re away – This is very handy if you’re expecting a delivery but can’t be there to take it. Simply answer the door on your phone, hit the button to open your garage door, get the delivery person to place it inside the garage, then close the door.
  1. Monitor your home inside and out – Activate internal and external cameras to keep a close eye on what’s happening while you’re away.
  1. Switch on lights and sprinklers – Go on holidays without anyone knowing by programming an automatic switch-on of outdoor and indoor lights. Turn on the sprinklers too so your garden maintains its green lustre.
  1. Arrive home in style – No more scrambling to find the gate or garage remote to get inside – just use your phone instead.

The ultimate sound system

There are quite a few DIY wireless music solutions on the market that allow you to connect and stream audio throughout your home. But many experience syncing problems or signal loss when streaming from an audio service. NUVO has been specifically designed to mitigate these issues.

It offers high-quality, ‘loss-less’ audio streaming through high fidelity NUVO speakers. Listen to different artists in each room or filter through the same one. Hook it up to your phone’s playlist or opt for a streaming service like iTunes or Spotify.

NUVO can be connected to any Bluetooth device, as well as storage devices and home theatre systems through audio lines or USB ports. With the choice of streaming sound in up to 16 different zones, your home’s music needs are totally taken care of.
